Caught between the end of adolescence and the beginning of adulthood, Laurence and Laurence (nicknamed Lou and Laylou, respectively) embark upon the summer of their seventeen’s. “It’s not about what happens, but about life, real life at this moment, when you’re 17, and you’re alive.” Throughout the film a question lingers: What makes up a summer when you are a seventeen-year-old girl living in an ordinary town, caught halfway between country and suburb? Laylou (2012) captures the moments of childhood slipping away from teenagers, revealing the poetry that is concealed beneath layers of mundane reality, and possibly, allows its epic and universal qualities to surface.

Philippe Lesage (born in 1973) is a Canadian director and screenwriter from Québec, Canada. He studied at McGill University and the European Film College in Denmark and began his career as a documentary filmmaker. He directed his first feature film in 2006, “Can We Live Together?”, a documentary about the sociologist Alain Touraine and the Parisian suburb crisis. From 2008 to 2009, he returned to the European Film College to teach documentary. By embodying the documentary concept in drama, Lesage specializes in representing the expressions of the characters with the flow of the lens, and captures trivial dialogues in order to bring out poetic narratives along side a beautiful touch of music. He leaves a lot of space for the audience’s own self-interpretation and lightly resonates themes of youth and life.

As a filmmaker, above all, I seek to immerse myself in a state of complete discovery from the moment I shoot the film to the final editing stages. This time again, I beheld a universe that was foreign to me: What makes up a summer when you are a seventeen year old girl living in an ordinary town, caught halfway between country and suburb? I position myself as a witness. My role is not to judge, but rather to reveal the poetry that is concealed beneath layers of mundane reality. And possibly, to allow its epic and universal qualities to surface. I base my work on a common premise that remains strikingly true: the smallest contains the greatest.
