日本 Japan | 2019 | DCP | Colour | 10min
The number of women participating in skateboarding in Japan has increased over the past ten years. It is moving towards a gender-diverse community alongside the skateboarding culture around the world. MURAI's Joy and Sorrow trilogy not only brings freshness into a long-standing masculine skateboarding culture, but she also captures the technical growth and transformation of each female skater. Director MURAI Yuri decides to use a whole new title, marking a new organic approach towards filming skaters. This ten minute teaser brings out a joyful and subcultural side of skateboarding. The whole film was purely the outcome of her skating and filming in the streets with any skater that she met, not just female, but male skaters as well.

When women's skateboarding becomes a subculture within skateboarding, where does it go next? Born in Kawagoe City, Saitama County in Japan, Yuri Murai started to skate at eighteen, stepping into a world of full of masculinity. She realized that no matter the filmer or the skaters in the video, they were all basically male. The rarity of women's skateboarding films motivated her to pick up the VX 2000 camera and set out to film female skaters in all manner of styles across Japan. She created Joy and Sorrow, a series of female skateboarding films featuring vibrant street skating movements and creative editing which now represent the cohesiveness of Japanese female skateboarders. Women in skateboarding are construcing their own culture, openly expressing their existence and freedom.
I hope my films make you want to go to Japan. Japan is a small country so people connect each other and that makes skate community bigger. It may be the reason why I could complete these films.
