Where Does a Body End? is an intimate portrait of the band SWANS, from their roots as a brutal, confrontational post-punk band, from the same early 1980s that gave us Sonic Youth, through their ill-fated bid at mainstream success in the 90s through the chaos of breakups to their odds-defying current status as one of the most accomplished and ambitious bands in the world.

In January of 1997, I flew from Toronto to New York to see what I thought would be the very last Swans concert on their final tour. I was 27 and had been a huge fan since first hearing Greed in 1986. That show remains one of the most all-consuming and memorable concerts I've ever been to, and I also knew that we fans would never experience this again.

When Swans announced their reactivation and subsequent tour in 2010, I knew I had to document them live. After filming about a dozen shows and being repeatedly consumed by the performances, I decided I need to tell the story of Swans. I approached Michael Gira with the idea and he generously accepted to let me enter the circle. I had always been amazed at how little visual material there was out there on this influential band.

This new era of Swans was the perfect time to tell their story-- starting back to the band's beginnings in New York City in the early 80's and filming the new shows in 2010. During the filming process, a treasure trove of hundreds of archive VHS tapes containing never-before-seen live shows and home videos of the band on tour was found. This allowed me to bridge the two eras of Swans (80s/90s and 2010's).

I was determined not to miss anything and embedded myself with the band-- travelling with them wherever I could, to rehearsals, album recordings, and performances-- often self-funding my trips and then, as word spread of what I was up to, receiving the help of supporters all over the world. Over the course of seven years, I filmed 40+ shows, always bringing my Braun Nizo film camera with me and shooting as much Super 8 as possible, capturing the performances with a gritty texture.

Where Does A Body End? documents the history of Swans from their early days starting out in the urban decay of New York City's Lower East Side to their global acceptance, playing sold out shows around the world in 2016-2017. The film also demonstrates Swan's irrefutable influence on bands including Savages, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Amanda Palmer, Ben Frost and more, through interviews with journalists, musicians and industry luminaries like Daniel Miller.

Where Does A Body End? also poses the question about our own existence and place in the universe. As Michael Gira says "...I'm still totally flummoxed at the fact that I even exist. It makes no sense to me at all that I'm here breathing or that this moment right now just passed and it's gone and where is it? Where am I right now? Big question is always... do I really exist?"
Watching the film, we feel Michael's perseverance and drive over an incredible journey of 35 years with Swans-- always reaching for divinity and a sonic truth.
