窮酸傻小子愛上任職片廠新聞部的漂亮小姐。為了一親芳澤，他變賣家當買下一台中古攝影機，爭取進新聞部工作，卻笨手笨腳被當笑柄，還因操作不當把新聞片拍成了實驗片。好不容易與心上人約會，又頻頻出糗，被情敵比下去。但他不屈不撓，人矮志氣高，為愛跑不停，攝影機也轉不停，偕同小猴子跟班，勇闖唐人街拍幫派火拼。
巴斯特基頓是與卓别林齊名的默片喜劇大師，動作特技之大膽、驚險與逗趣，堪稱成龍的祖師爺，一張撲克臉表情的高反差，又立起獨樹一幟的「冷面笑匠」招牌。本片是基頓首次與好萊塢大片廠米高梅合作，在劇本嚴謹度與獨特笑料間取得完美平衡，成為片廠內部多年的喜劇範本。美國獨立製片名導吉姆賈木許亦鍾愛此片，選為十大電影。

1889年生於美國德州，1921年起擔任電影導演。基頓在米高梅時期的作品多由他執導，兩人是好友，同樣出身雜耍家族並且熱愛棒球。
Edward Sedgwick was born on November 7, 1892 in Galveston, Texas, USA. He was a director and actor, known for The Cameraman (1928), Chasing the Moon (1922) and The Flaming Frontier (1926). Sedgwick turned out scores of westerns starring Tom Mix and Hoot Gibson, among others, before switching primarily to comedy. His career crested with MGM in the late 1920s and early 30s, buoyed by a number of collaborations with Buster Keaton.
