由於父女鮮少見面，溫弗瑞決定前往羅馬尼亞給女兒一個驚喜。不料驚喜反成「驚嚇」，弄巧成拙的他使自己與女兒伊內絲的關係降至冰點。不過溫弗瑞並未因此打退堂鼓，而是選擇搖身一變喬裝成神秘人物「東尼厄德曼」，再度闖進女兒的生活，一場諜對諜的父女大戰就此展開。伊內絲也漸漸發現每當自己越想遠離老爸時，兩人的距離卻越靠越近……

導演瑪倫艾德費時兩年完成的劇本創作，將自身父親的無厘頭個性，揉和美國喜劇演員安迪考夫曼的幽默特質，打造出這位令人捧腹又著迷的老爸。本片於坎城首映時，曾打破影史紀錄，創下當時場刊分數新高。本片成功透過一對父女關係，細微刻劃出人際疏離與誠信等問題，幽默又巧妙地剖析人性，在長達163分鐘的片長中娓娓道出一位女兒從不堪其擾，到最後感動其衷的動人故事。

Winfried, a retired music teacher, doesn’t see much of his working daughter Ines. He suddenly decides to surprise her with a visit, which is an awkward move because Ines is busy working on an important project. Winfried loves to annoy his daughter with corny pranks, making them reach an impasse. Though he agrees to return home to Germany, Winfried didn't actually go back and disguised in an outrageous alter ego and posing as her CEO's life coach. In all the madness, Ines begins to understand that her eccentric father might deserve some place in her life after all.
