The first story is about a man who leaves home for a few days, and ends up living across the road from his wife, without her knowing, for more than twenty years. The second story is about a wealthy man who becomes a tramp, without foregoing his wealth. The third story is about an impoverished young couple who suddenly inherit a mansion on one condition that they retain an old butler who has always been with the house...The fourth story is about a businessman who pretends he has a wife and a daughter and sister abroad in order to justify certain financial operations, except that one day he learns that this entirely fictitious family is planning to come and stay... Part-comedy, part-nightmare, these stories are in fact three aspects of a single tale. The three characters are one and the same man, a man affected by what is known as multiple personality disorder. And though he possesses (at least) three lives, like most people he can die only one death.
