正值青春年華的桂美隻身從大陸來台，暫居表姊家中。寄人籬下的生活讓桂美壓抑無奈，因而選擇步入婚姻。然而面對好賭成性的丈夫，還得相夫教子刻苦持家，更別提生為繼母的她，面對五個孩子好是頭疼。為了錢，為了家庭，桂美不得不在孩子、在自己、在她的人生中，不斷做出抉擇與犧牲，活出叫人唏噓卻也偉大的一生。
桂美的人生軌跡相應著台灣經濟社會的成長，從無到有，從貧困到富庶，從農業步入工商社會演進過程。本作雖肯定了外省女性對家庭、社會的貢獻卻也哀嘆其勉力生存之苦。張毅導演身為鮮為人提及的「新浪潮」健將，憑藉此片一掃金馬最佳導演及最佳影片，而早年以《女性的復仇》等「社會寫實片」走紅的楊惠姍，則洗盡鉛華，以跨年齡的細膩演技獲金馬影后肯定。
In her youthful prime in 1950s, Kuei-mei leaves the Mainland China for Taiwan, seeking refuge with her cousin. Struggling against a gambling-addicted husband and the challenges of stepmotherhood, she navigates a life of choices and sacrifices, driven by love for her family. Eventually, Kuei-mei's lives out a tale of resilience and determination, echoing with both sorrow and greatness.

導演介紹
張毅（1951-2020），台灣新浪潮導演之一，1980憑藉著《源》榮獲亞州影展最佳編劇獎，其先後所創作了的《玉卿嫂》、《我這樣過了一生》、《我的愛》等經典作品，被譽為「女性電影三部曲」，1987年放下如日中天的電影事業，選擇與楊惠姍共同創立琉璃工作室，轉身投向琉璃藝術的懷抱。 CHANG Yi, listed as one of the New Taiwan Cinema directors, is less mentioned but prominent. His most renowned film is Kuei-mei, a Woman (1985), the winner of Best Feature Film, Best Director, Best Leading Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay. After marrying Loretta Yang, the leading actress in many Chang's movies, he founded contemporary glass studio and left the industry.
